Toronto Photo Walks: Davisville
Well, I think I am organized a bit. This past weekend I led, planned and set up a photo walk for the group. I managed to roust most of our members from the downtown and southern portions of the city to my area to show some interesting sites. It was a cold day, but not too bad to hang around in, unlike todays temperature of -20 Celsius. So we started out from Davisville station and wandered through the local neighborhood looking at sights, sculptures, and the usual odd ball things we find. Carry on walkers...

Softboxing: Miniatures
Well, the soft box is mostly a success. I think I need more light in some cases though. Will be working on that. In the meantime, I am starting to document my Warhammer miniature army. Fantasy battles for those that are curious. Don't ask how many. There are just a lot. Some I have had fun with.

A Do It Yourself Project: Table Top Soft Box
Okay, this post is a little technical but I just had to share. I got a little ambition this past weekend and went on a whirlwind tear cleaning my apartment. I know, I know, not even close to the annual spring cleaning. Up shot, I found some foam core board that had been gathering dust and I had a clean table to work with...

So what do I do? Mess it up by making what's known as a soft box. A device that diffuses light and reduces hard shadows with strobes. At least that's what I think it's supposed to do. So a bunch of cutting and bending and folding later this is what I ended up with..

A quick little test to make sure my strobe fits...

Just a few more details and it was almost ready. Tinfoil and a cloth front.

So a little bit of effort, ingenuity, and use of trash junk SUPPLIES that have been hanging around my place and I end up with the following. First is with my places "natural" light then the soft box, with a white back ground and finally with the cloth cover in full soft box mode.

I think I will be having a bunch of fun with this new device. Expect a lot of shots of my Warhammer miniatures in the next little while. An old hobby meets the new passion.

Creative Use of Flash
Ever get an idea you just have to try out? I have been thinking of one for months and months. Ever since I ran across a tool for photography called wireless flash triggers. There are all sorts of brands from the big buck expensive ones all the way down to what's known as e-bay triggers. Different varieties, and lots of fun and uses for them. For one thing, range...
There is a slide near where I live that I just wanted to light up from the inside. Well, a couple of weeks ago I got a set of triggers from someone that was giving them away. Friday night, I finally got to use my idea. And here are the results.
No Flash..

Big Flash....

None

Some

Nothing :(

Everything :)

A lot of fun is going to happen with my new toy and tool...Stay tuned.

Indoor Dog Park...
What do you do if it's too cold out and you want to give your favorite four legged friend some exercise? You go to an indoor dog park. Me and SusieG took Nietzsche out to this place in Missisauga called "Doggie Central". A great place to meet new dogs, and stay warm and dry in the winter.
With stuff like this outside...

Why be uncomfortable...
